Corby Old Village landmarks

Love these photos.... Do you have any photos of the cardigan in the 80's my mum and dad ran it from 1985 - 1992 would be great to see it in those years too x

My Great Grandfather James Monk Houghton ran the Cardigan Arms 1871 to 1881 at least according to the censuses.

The photograph of the Boys Club brings back many memories of the dances that used to be held there, (65 years ago).

Anyone know anything about Davis Close ...I had never heard of it growing up...but it looks very old by the 1959 pic . Paddi Mullan

I recall a story my late father told me .. Originally from Banff, NE Scotland he like many other men came to Corby to seek work in British Steel in the late 50's. Upon arriving in Corby late evening without anywhere to stay, he made is way to British Steel, whereby a kindly Security man let him sleep in the security office, after which he managed to secure a position in the Blast Furnace where he was employed until the mid 80's. About being employed about a year, and having just finished a 6-2 shift, he popped into the Cardigan Arms, where he noticed the Security Man who had kindly offered him a roof over his head for the night, and was only to greatful to show his appreciation with a pint or two:-) My father never forgot his kindness! I also recall my father telling me about the doctor who would be perched on on the side or the bar, only too willing to offer prescriptions to ease any aches or pains that the workmen had lol! Sadly my father's health deteriorated and he moved down to London in order that I could care for him, but he always said "Corby has always been good to me" and I'm pleased that I was able to lay him to rest in Corby ... back home with mum were he belongs:-)
